SME Albania successfully closed the project “International Festival of Agritourism, Cuisine and Cultural Heritage – Gjirokastra 2026”, a major tourism and cultural initiative held in the city of Gjirokastra and the surrounding rural areas (Labëria, Lunxhëria and Libohova) between 1 June and 30 July 2026.

The project was implemented by the Albanian SME Institute “SME Albania”, with the support of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sports.

Purpose of the project

Extending the tourist season and driving local economic growth

The project aimed to increase tourist flows and extend the tourist season in the region, promoting rural, culinary and cultural tourism as an engine of local economic development.

The initiative responded directly to the Ministry of Tourism and Environment’s priority of extending the tourist season and supporting sustainable territorial development.

Specific objectives

Positioning the city as a destination for tourism and cultural events in the region.

Promoting agritourism

Local products showcased through fairs and tastings with producers from the area.

Safeguarding heritage

Protecting and promoting the cultural and culinary heritage of the area.

Engaging rural communities

Local businesses and village families brought into the tourism value chain.

The “Gjirokastra Rural Experience” brand

Strengthening the territorial brand and the identity of the destination.

International cooperation

Creating new opportunities for cooperation with partners abroad.

Farmers, producers and guesthouses presented the products of the area to local and international visitors.

Traditional cuisine festival

Traditional dishes of Labëria and Lunxhëria, in cooperation with culinary schools and universities.

Artistic and cultural programme

20–30 local and international artists performing on stages in the city and in the villages.

Rural tourism experiences

Itineraries across Labëria, Lunxhëria and Libohova, promoted through the destination’s digital platform.
